Harriot Kezia Hunt is accepted at Harvard Medical School.
1850
The first woman accepted at Harvard Medical School, Hunt withdraws her application after the school passes two resolutions. The first is: “Resolved, That no woman of true delicacy would be willing in the presence of men, to listen to the discussion of the subjects that necessarily come under the consideration of the student of medicine.” The second is: “Resolved, That we are not opposed to allowing woman her rights, but we do protest against her appearance where her presence is calculated to destroy our respect for the modesty and delicacy of her sex.” Hunt subsequently graduates from the women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania. Women do not graduate from the school until 1949.*
